Simple camping and glamping in an unspoilt location with glorious views of the Dorset Downs

They say 鈥渓ess is more鈥 鈥 a good philosophy, we think, when it comes to camping. Nowhere does this ring truer than Haddon Copse Farm, a 30 acre organic farm where looking after the landscape is second nature and camping meadows feel as at home in the scenery as the grazing fields that surround them.

Life here is about the simple pleasures. Off the beaten track, with dark skies at night and excellent views of the Blackmore Vale by day, the most discerning feature here is the relaxed atmosphere and the plentiful space the farm provides. Large pitches are placed around the edge of a vehicle-free field, populated in the middle by children throwing a frisbee and acquiring more than few grass stains 鈥 a souvenir of time spent truly enjoying the countryside. Each pitch has a fire-pit, while kindling, charcoal and logs can be bought from the farm at a very reasonable price.

The newest addition to the site is the Retreat Hut 鈥 a cosy cabin for couples with comfy double bed and outdoor campers kitchen, plus lots of lovely extras like fresh towels, organic cotton bedding, complimentary breakfast for your first morning, and, of course, that all important firepit.

The owner鈥檚 attitude, too, is exactly what you would hope for. 鈥淪ettle yourselves in and we will come and see you at some point鈥, is the opening gambit of Tom, who has to spread time between running the farm and the campsite. A herd of cattle is ushered into new pastures and a morning check of the lambs is all carried out while campers are still yet to unzip the tent flaps. When they do, the reward is freshly baked bread and the chance to buy the fruits of all this labour; award-winning organic meats and eggs from the freely roaming chickens.

Ablutions here are eco-friendly. A stroll through the newly-planted orchard, leads to the to toilets and the wet-room style solar-powered showers. While there are also washing-up sinks and a freezer for ice-packs, the site is refreshingly underdeveloped. Just the way it seems it should be here. The place is blissfully unspoilt and activities like exploring local footpaths or cooking atop the campfire provide wonderfully authentic camping entertainment.

Beyond the wooden farm gates, continue the back to nature experience by swimming in the nearby River Stour, one of the best wild swimming rivers in the country. Its meandering course through the Blackmore Vale, classic Dorset dairy country, makes for various good walking routes, while historic spots like Hambledon Hill are perfect for a summer stroll and countryside picnic. As at the campsite, it's best to let the setting do the work. Walks, swims, picnics, they all allow you to explore Dorset鈥檚 wonderful countryside and, in between, the cosy, picture-perfect rural settlements aren鈥檛 half bad either.

Nearby

On the doorstep, walking options allow you to discover a little more of the farm, following footpaths through the surrounding cow fields, sometimes accompanied by pigs and sheep. A short drive into the Dorset Downs provides further routes. Walk in the footsteps of Thomas Hardy and his characters or swim at various points along the River Stour, renowned for its clear, appealing waters. The Iron Age fort 聽(01297 489481), is a few miles away with a steep 20 minute climb to the top. The slopes are trodden in interesting history but today it's a peaceful place, home to a nature reserve preserving the Adonis blue butterfly that flourishes on the chalkland downs. Sturminster Newton has a good collection of pubs and shops but travelling a little further to spots like and is an excellent choice.

Food & Drink

The farm produces award-winning organic meat under a separate brand name, 'Angel Cottage Organics', which is available onsite during the camping season, along with their free range eggs. Order the night before and they'll be delivered to your tent along with local organic milk, freshly baked bread and organic butter. With advanced notice you can also ask for sausages, chicken, lamb and pork from the freezer. For a good pub, try The Antelope Inn (01258 817295; 1 mile) (01258 920022; 2陆 miles) or (01258 817956; 4 miles).

Opening Times

Mid July 鈥 early September.

The Owner Says

We run a small, quiet site where you can enjoy the peace and beauty of the Dorset countryside away from the hurly-burly of everyday life. We hope you'll begin to switch off the moment you arrive whether you are pitching your own tent or settling into one of our three bell tents. That applies to your phone too - there's no electricity, no wifi and patchy mobile reception and we think those are all good things! Instead, you can relax and enjoy some of life's simple pleasures - take in the view, stroll round our farm walk, light a fire, watch the stars. The site has a relaxed atmosphere and with聽just seven pitches, never feels crowded or full. All the pitches are well spaced out and it's just a short stroll through the orchard to our two private shower rooms/loos. We hope you'll find the personal touches such as advise on where to walk or聽swim,聽warm bread delivered to your tent in the morning or help choosing some of the聽food we produce on the farm for your barbeque will all combine to ensure that a stay at Haddon Copse Farm leaves you feeling refreshed and full of the good things in life!

Social Distancing Measures

This summer, more than ever, we want you to enjoy your holiday and leave our site leaving happier and healthier than when you arrived! Our small site (just seven pitches plus The Retreat Hut) means that there is always a lot of space between pitches - at least 10 metres - and the site is never crowded. We have installed hand sanitizer dispensers outside our showers/toilets and these are also accessible for use at the washing up sinks.

Socially distanced camping

In the middle of a pandemic, this was the perfect place to camp. With so few pitches, we felt perfectly safe. The facilities were excellent and the owner very friendly and approachable. We cycled around a lot so this was a great base for exploring north Dorset. The accessible freezer was a real added bonus for helping us keep our cooler cool the whole weekend. We also enjoyed the firepits and local produce delivered to our tent!

Amazing Bell Tent!

Me and my partner stayed in one of the bell tents, which is surrounded by beautiful scenery. It was all perfectly laid out to every detail with a eco friendly feel with the compost toilet and mattress made from recycled jeans (which was super comfy)! Fire pit supplied worked perfectly, with the option to buy fire wood on site. Facilities were clean and lots of information given about surrounding areas. Couldn't fault a thing! Cant wait to go back again!

Mums and daughters FABULOUS camping trip

Such a wonderful camp site! Just how camping should be - in the countryside, peaceful, beautiful, not many tents in the field, no cars on site, clean facilities and friendly, helpful host. Loved having a fire pit and so nice to wake up to sausages, fresh bread, milk and butter delivered to our 'doorstep'. We took our own tents, there was plenty of space, very reasonably priced. Thank you Tom. I can't wait to go back.

Quite, relaxed, clean and stress free environment.

Peace and quiet in a secluded location. Clean and tidy facilities which were well managed for the number of people on site - we鈥檇 never have to wait to use the bathroom here. Such fun using the wheelbarrow to take our kit to the tent - and great that there were no cars on the field. The view - nothing but beautiful Dorset landscape, no a house in sight. Most definitely will be visiting again. Thank you for having us.

Very peaceful break

Had a lovely couple of nights here, super quiet and really felt like you were getting away from it all. Delicious sausages and other fresh produce delivered to the tent for breakfast and really helpful hosts. The bell tent was spacious for 4 people and we made very good use of the fire pit. Don鈥檛 forget to look up on a clear night when the sun goes down - the stars are unreal!

Best campsite yet!

Such an enjoyable four days stay at Haddon Copse farm. With just a few pitches the site is peaceful and the view of the surrounding countryside is stunning. The facilities are clean, simple and stylish and the solar powered showers are perfect. It is nice to be on a farm, with the occasional chattering of geese to be heard through the hedgerows and there is a nice walk through the woods and around the farm. The owner is friendly and helpful and we had a lovely fresh loaf, butter and eggs from the farm one morning. Being able to have campfires also makes this the perfect camping experience.

A beautiful, very quiet site with excellent views, and big skies. It is very refreshing to just enjoy the nature around.

Lovely site, very friendly. Very clean and convenient toilets and showers, along with the possibility of buying organic eggs, bread and meat from the farm, delivered to your tent! Very enjoyable couple of nights away.

Amazing peaceful beautiful break

Stayed in the bell tent with my one year old and husband. Was large comfortable and safe with great mattresses. Lovely private pitch. Firepit brilliant. Loo and shower were easy to use with my pram and Georgie was free to roam and crawl. We visited the geese and the piggies and were just really relaxed and happy. The owners Tom and Mark could not be more helpful but respectful of space. Love the place. Will be back!

We had a lovely stay here, very comfortable mattress. Great hosts, and we will definitely be back with friends.

Great site

Stayed for a weekend break in a bell tent and the site was perfect for us. Pitches are well spaced and bell tent provided plenty of room for 4. The shower block was clean and as the site keeps to a small number of pitches they were never busy. The fire pit has a bbq rack for cooking and wood is available to buy for an evening campfire. This site is great for a short stay as we saved time by not having to pitch a tent so we could get cooking as soon as we arrived on the first evening. There is no shop but you can order farm produce like eggs, bacon etc. The site is basically a field with a good quality shower block so make sure you have everything you need and don鈥檛 worry about not having to park by your tent, the car parking area is very close and we found unloading quite manageable.

ABSOLUTELY UNREAL!!!

This was quite possibly one of the best long weekends I have ever had. We stayed for 2 nights for our first anniversary and couldn't have hoped for better. Bell tent was clean, big, and perfectly secluded from the rest of the camp. Fire pits were an added bonus, and gave the campsite an extra feeling of home. Could order eggs, bread etc for breakfast, and lamb burgers for dinner. Wood, coal and kindling were available to buy, not even expensive! Will be coming back once a year hopefully, and have already recommended the site to close friends. Thank you so much for making our first year anniversary incredible.

nice and quiet, basic

Nice and quiet site, with lots of space between tents, and nice views. Squeeky clean toilet/showers, nice landscaping done by the lawnmower. Good fireplace, and very helpfull staff. Some downsides: no shade (bring tarp), no change of cooking in strong winds or rain (bring windscreen), no change of doing/drying laundry (pack well), bell-tents are very basic (bring chairs), can get boggy in places (bring wellies). Sea is at 30 mins, fresh bread 5 mins, supermarket 20 mins. Alltogether: nice concept, clean and quiet, but very basic and somewhat overpriced (compared to other organic farms where we camped).

Wonderful quiet wild camping

We stayed her for 4 nights over the August bank holiday 2015. From the minute we arrived we were made to feel very welcome by the owner/farmer, Tom. He could not do enough for us to ensure our stay was an excellent one. The site is a large field with only 7 pitches in it. The pitches are an excellent size, we had space for an 8 man tent, porch and large canopy easily. They were also well spaced. even when the site was full, it was never noisy. The facilities were excellent, much more civilised than we had expected. There are two toilet/shower room with hot showers and flushing toilets. There is also a covered washing up area outside with hot running water. All facilities were cleaned daily.

I can also highly recommend the farm produce that was for sale, we tried the eggs, sausages, pork and milk. All were extremely tasty and well priced. There was also well priced charcoal, wood and kindling for sale. Note there are no grills on the fire pits unless you hire one of the bell tents so you will need to bring your own if you want to cook on the fire.

A wonderful, quiet, back to nature camp ground. I would highly recommend.
